Spotted bass in the Mobile basin are a sub-species known as the Alabama spotted bass. Typically the Alabama spotted bass achieve a larger size than the northern spotted bass.

Matthew Williamson shows that, though Lake Martin may be known for large numbers of spotted bass, Lake Martin can produce big spots like this one over six pounds. It was caught in late March of 2006 on a 4-inch green pumpkin dead ringer Zoom worm with the tail dipped in chartreuse garlic lure coloring.
