SafetyAlabama Boating Safety Certification—Every Alabama boater born on or after August 28, 1954, must successfully complete an Alabama Boating Safety Course. The lifetime certification is accepted in other states and provinces. To obtain your certification during the BOW workshop, you must register for the following courses:
Alabama Hunter Education Course—Interested participants should contact Sylvia Payne at 1-800-262-3151 or sylvia.payne@dcnr.alabama.gov. Those taking the course will receive a Hunter Ed CD-ROM. Complete the course on the Internet or CD-ROM and bring the printout to BOW. Beyond Band-Aids—Learn what to do if a mishap occurs while you are miles from medical help. What you know may mean the difference between life and death. Learn basic first aid for minor injuries as well as lifesaving tips and techniques for serious injuries. Note: only offered in October session. L.A.S.S. (Ladies Awareness Safety Self-Defense)—This class will offer a set of awareness, assertiveness, and verbal confrontation skills with safety strategies and techniques that will help to enable you to successfully escape, resist, and survive violent attacks. Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing, as they will be practicing the self-defense techniques with a partner.
Backcountry First Aid – Learn how to respond in an emergency in remote areas, structured patient assessment, treatment and protection from further harm, proper decision-making on evacuation of a patient to a physician's care. Note: Only offered in March session.
